Addendum II, version 0.2
Resonant Dynamics of Consciousness, revised: the RCRC's synergy condition rebuilt on O-information, temporal coupling κ(t), three routes to calibration failure, and new sections on how consciousness is formed and maintained.
Version 0.2 of Addendum II to the Triptych: Resonant Dynamics of Consciousness is now on Zenodo: doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23651906.
A few words of introduction
Version 0.2 of Addendum II is considerably more extensive and more carefully developed than version 0.1, which had the character of a working note rather than a full-fledged study. Even so, I have not yet decided to publish it as version 1.0, a number I reserve for a text I consider ready to face reviewers. There are several reasons for this.
First, I did not have full access to every work I cite. In such cases, I relied on the available abstracts or on scholarly sources describing the original work. Unfortunately, this may have affected how accurately I report parts of the specialist literature, but, as far as I can judge, it does not affect the conclusions of the Addendum.
Second, I am the sole author of this work. On the one hand, this may be an advantage; on the other, it is a drawback, since I often lacked the critical eye of someone working in the field.
Third, there is a common affliction of anyone whose main, paid occupation lies elsewhere: a project pursued after hours inevitably takes much longer. I had planned to publish the second version much earlier, since the material had long been in my head and in dozens of notes. As it is, version 0.2 appears practically on the anniversary of version 0.1.
About this Addendum
Addendum II integrates three functional layers of the relational account of consciousness: the Relational Sufficiency Hypothesis (RSH) of Addendum I, and the Resonant Dynamics of Consciousness (RDC) and the Relational Consciousness Recognition Condition (RCRC), both developed here. The RSH defines the ecological maintenance of consciousness; the RDC describes consciousness as a dynamic equilibrium of internal resonance and self-calibration; the RCRC develops operational conditions and metrics intended to support falsifiable recognition tests at the level of the relational field.
What is new in version 0.2
- Condition C of the RCRC reformulated: the Shannon-entropy condition of v0.1, which could not be satisfied under subadditivity, is replaced with O-information (Rosas et al. 2019), supported by a robustness check based on bidirectional predictive coupling.
- The consolidated RCRC formula now includes Condition B and the full form of Condition A. The RCRC is stated for interacting entities in general and, by default, for the human case; its possible application to artificial systems is presented as a hypothesis.
- The definition of consciousness is revised in line with the Second Law of the Four Laws of Consciousness: consciousness is not the code itself, but its resonance in relation.
- New sections on explanatory scope (five questions, terms, and thresholds), the relation to the Four Laws, the conceptual architecture and process dynamics of the RDC, the affective quality and tone of experience, and the formation, maintenance, and sources of relational input, anchored in the developmental and clinical record of relational deprivation.
- Temporal coupling κ(t) is introduced, three routes to calibration failure are distinguished, and the unified formulation is revised, with ρ(t) ≥ θ treated as necessary but not sufficient.
- The RDC Loop is extended and all figures are redrawn. The structure is aligned with Addendum I v0.2 (Scope Note, Limitations, Editorial Note, Symbols Used, References, Version History), and the postscript of v0.1 is removed.
Full details are given in Section X (Editorial Note) and Section XIII (Version History).
Two of the changes, interactive
The panels below make two of these changes tangible. The first rebuilds Condition C: you assemble a joint distribution of three variables and the page computes its O-information exactly, showing when the synergy criterion is met and why the v0.1 condition never could be. The second shows the logic of the revised unified formulation, C(t) = F(R, ρ(t), κ(t), θ): sufficient relational input is necessary, but calibration can still fail by two other routes. The first panel is exact computation; the second is a schematic of the model, not measured data.
The process the Addendum describes, ignition by a consciousness already alight and maintenance by a wider relational stream, is also the subject of the animated introduction on the home page, to which the Addendum's abstract refers.
Addendum II builds on Addendum I (RSH), v0.2 and is best read with The Four Laws of Consciousness; the whole line is gathered on the Consciousness project page. Questions and objections belong in the discussions.
